SEO - A quick overview

Every website page on the planet has a ranking, some like the home page of Amazon.com have an amazing ranking and others have no ranking at all.  Google and other search engines use this ranking to work out how interesting and relevant your content is depending on what people are searching for.

For example, if you are searching for How To Cut A Cat’s Nails every page in the world that at least doesn’t say those 6 keywords a few times is dropped off the list of sites shown to you.  It’s quite a sophisticated system as Google’s entire search business is based around you searching for something and finding it, Google makes it hard for you to cheat the system here.

In saying that, you can “Optimise” your content and the way it is perceived to gain a better ranking. You still need to have great content but SEO can help get you to the top of the list.

Your six main SEO focus areas

Website

The quality of your website is very important, if your website is not responsive (scales for cell phones and tablets) then you get a very (very) bad score. Did you know that as of January 2019 over 4.4 billion people were active internet users and 52% of them were using a mobile device to search the internet! In China it’s over 90% of the population that uses mobile devices for searching the web!!

Content

Googles crawlers often affectionately know as spiders are the programs the read and rank every page on every site in the world. How they exactly work is a very closely guarded secret at Google but we do have a pretty good idea what they are looking for, relevant content.  If your content has no pictures your score goes down, if the information is to brief then your score goes down, if you just have repeating keywords (i.e. you are trying to cheat the system) then you guessed it… your score goes down.  Your content is by far the most important part of SEO, make it informative, relevant and current.  Information that has been around for a long time and has a lot of views plus is updated regularly will get a very high score.

Backlinks

Backlinks are another great process to get your score up without costing you a cent.  The more websites that post links to your content the more relevant the Google Crawlers think it is and the higher your ranking goes. This is a very powerful process that is often overlooked.

Keywords

Think of keywords like an overview of your content, they tell the crawlers that this is the main purpose of your content. This is also often the information that pops up in the Search Engine so make it good!

Social Media

Backlinks on Social Media work the same as backlinks on websites but are much easier to get. Posting your content to Facebook and asking people to Share is going to give you tons of backlinks extremely quickly and if you’re lucky enough for your content to go viral then welcome to the top of the ranking list!

Ranking

Once we have asked for your content to be crawled by Google you will have a ranking, Google won’t tell you what it is but you can easily just google your content topic and see where you end up on the Search Results list.  If you are number one then that is awesome, but it’s very unlikely for new content to make it to the first page within the first six months as the content is just too new and not enough people have viewed it to give it a good rating.  The plan is to constantly be checking and updating these six bullet points and over time watching your ranking rise. If it’s not then you might need to talk to us!

What’s the difference between SEO and PPC (Adwords)

SEO vs. PPC

SEO sets you up with what is known as Organic Traffic meaning you have not paid to be shown in the search engine unlike PPC (Pay-Per-Click) which is paying a small fee to be shown at the top of the list.

The way Google displays this information has changed recently so I have put together a quick guide for you.

The listings in the RED boxes are paid adverts with the box on the left being a website listing and the box on the right showcasing products relevant to my search.

The listings in the GREEN box are based on geography and are shown to you because of their vicinity to your location.  Not so relevant for computer parts unless you planned to go and view the item before purchasing but great if your search was “Car tyres near me”

The listings in the BLUE box are your organic search results based on their rankings. I find these are often the most relevant to what you are searching for because they are based purely on their rankings.
